How the notion of epistemic injustice can mitigate polarization in a conversation about cultural, ethnic, and racial categorizations.Ingvill Bjørnstad Åberg - 2024 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 57 (4-5):983-1003.
ABSTRACT It is a common contention that education done uncritically and unreflectively may serve to sustain and justify the status quo, in terms of mechanisms of cultural or racial privileging and marginalization. This article explores an argument made from within anti-oppressive education theory and advocated by theorist Kevin Kumashiro, namely that transformative education must entail altering harmful citational practices. I see two shortcomings in relation to this argument: first, its focus on discursive practice entails a prerequisite of high discursive literacy. (...)

Adding to the Mix: Integrating ELSI into a National Nanoscale Science and Technology Center.David J. Bjornstad & Amy K. Wolfe - 2011 - Science and Engineering Ethics 17 (4):743-760.
This paper describes issues associated with integrating the study of Ethical, Legal and Social Issues (ELSI) into ongoing scientific and technical research and describes an approach adopted by the authors for their own work with the center for nanophase materials sciences (CNMS) at the Oak Ridge national laboratory (ORNL). Four key questions are considered: (a) What is ELSI and how should it identify and address topics of interest for the CNMS? (b) What advantages accrue to incorporating ELSI into the CNMS? (...)

‘Almost the same, but not quite’: Ontological politics of recognition in modern science fiction.Ingvil Hellstrand - 2016 - Feminist Theory 17 (3):251-267.
This article explores how issues of ‘not quite human-ness’ expose the conditions of possibility of being considered human; of human ontology. I refer to these dynamics for identifying sameness and difference as ontological politics of recognition. Tracing the genealogies of passing, I situate passing and Othering socio-political regulation and ideological frameworks for conceptualising ontology. I am particularly concerned with how the notion of ontology is bound up in questions of race and gender, and with the entanglements of technology and biology (...)

Civil Society and Biopolitics in Contemporary Russia: The Case of Russian "Daddy-Schools".Pelle Åberg - 2015 - Foucault Studies 20:76-95.
This article deals with civil society organizations active in the field of family policy and demographic issues in contemporary Russia. This article uses Michel Foucault’s concepts of biopolitics and governmentality and later developments discussing technologies of citizenship. More specifically, using interviews, documents, and participant observations, so-called “daddy-schools” that have emerged in and around Saint Petersburg since 2008, are studied as a mode of governmentality. The analysis shows how the civic initiative studied attempted to empower fathers and how it has altered (...)

    Realism and relativism in modern physics.Claes Åberg - 1991 - Synthese 89 (1):41 - 61.
The standpoint of realism has been widely used to argue in favour of, or against, particular physical theories. An analysis is made of the adequacy of such arguments, taking an argument by Einstein as a starting point. Some reflexions are given on relativism and invariance. Invariances can be seen as generators of both regularity and paradox in physics.

The Marginalization of the Mémoires of Louis XIV.Hall Bjornstad - 2012 - The European Legacy 17 (6):779-789.
This article addresses a peculiar form of marginalization in that the marginalized text it discusses originates not in the margin but at the very center of political power. Generally ignored, sometimes quoted as an illustration, Louis XIV's Mémoires for the Instruction of the Dauphin is today rarely read and even more rarely submitted to close reading. The article discusses the reasons for this marginalization and why the text deserves more scholarly attention, including the thorny question what exactly it would mean (...)

Hvordan kan vi forstå lærerrollen når skolen foregår hjemme?Ingvill Krogstad Svanes, Emilia Andersson-Bakken & Tuva Bjørkvold - 2021 - Studier i Pædagogisk Filosofi 10 (1).
During the Covid-19 outbreak in March 2020, all Norwegian primary schools got closed down, and both pupils and teachers had to move the school home. This challenged the established teacher role and led to changes in teachers' teaching practices. The purpose of this article is to discuss the role of the teacher, concretized as the teacher's teaching practice in the time of homeschooling. In order to shed light on the teachers' teaching practice we take as our starting point interviews with (...)

Scholars studying the ethical, legal, and social issues associated with emerging technologies maintain the importance of considering these issues throughout the research and development cycle, even during the earliest stages of basic research. Embedding these considerations within the scientific process requires communication between ELSI scholars and the community of physical scientists who are conducting that basic research. We posit that this communication can be effective on a broad scale only if it links societal issues directly to characteristics of the emerging (...)

A Framework for Analyzing Dialogues over the Acceptability of Controversial Technologies.Nichole D. Kerchner, Milton Russell, David J. Bjornstad & Amy K. Wolfe - 2002 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 27 (1):134-159.
This article asks under what circumstances controversial technologies would be considered seriously for remediation instead of being rejected out of hand. To address this question, the authors developed a conceptual framework called public acceptability of controversial technologies. PACT considers site-specific, decision-oriented dialogues among the individuals and groups involved in selecting or recommending hazardous waste remediation technologies. It distinguishes technology acceptability, that is, a willingness to consider seriously, from technology acceptance, the decision to deploy. The framework integrates four dimensions: an acceptability (...)

Evaluation of 92 cardiovascular proteins in dried blood spots collected under field‐conditions.Karin Broberg, Johanna Svensson, Karin Grahn, Eva Assarsson, Mikael Åberg, Jenny Selander & Stefan Enroth - 2021 - Bioessays 43 (9):2000299.
Workplace‐collected blood spots deposited on filter paper were analysed with multiplexed affinity‐based protein assays and found to be suitable for proteomics analysis. The protein extension assay (PEA) was used to characterize 92 proteins using 1.2 mm punches in repeated samples collected from 20 workers. Overall, 97.8% of the samples and 91.3% of the analysed proteins passed quality control. Both within and between spot correlations using six replicates from the same individual were above 0.99, suggesting that comparable levels are obtained from (...)

Planning for scarcity: Developing a hospital ventilator allocation policy for Covid-19.Emily Ferrell, Katherine Drabiak, Mary Alfano-Torres, Salman Ahmed, Azzat Ali, Brad Bjornstad, John Dietrick, Mary M. Foley, Alex Garcia-Gonzalez, Shannon Robb & Douglas Ross - forthcoming - Clinical Ethics:147775092110162.
Objective To develop an ethically, legally, and clinically appropriate ventilator allocation policy for AdventHealth Tampa and AdventHealth Carrollwood in Tampa, Florida, which could be enacted swiftly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods During Spring 2020, a subcommittee of the Medical Ethics Committee established consensus on the fundamental principles of the policy, then built on existing ethical, legal, and clinical guidance. Results The plan was finalized in May 2020. The plan triages patients based on exclusion criteria, prognosis and expected benefit of ventilation, (...)

Vauvenargues is one of those authors we think we know without having read. Sidelined among the minor moralists, the texts he published are rarely considered rigorous and powerful. Hence we are endebted to Laurent Bove for having taken this thought seriously, and for having systematically brought into relief its most striking intellectual aspects. Vauvenargues himself asked his readers to “read slowly” (“lire doucement”)—a reading ethic that has finally been followed to the letter. Pascal also sought the right rhythm of reading, (...)
